I can’t believe Man United sanctioned summer transfer – he’s dazzled me

Former Chelsea striker Gianfranco Zola has admitted he is puzzled why Manchester United opted to sell Scott McTominay in the summer transfer window.

Despite being a product of the United academy, the Reds opted to cash in on McTominay in the summer as they looked to boost their transfer pot. The Reds eventually shook hands on a ÂŁ25m deal with Napoli which allowed the club to sanction the arrival of Manuel Ugarte from PSG.

Since then, the two players have had contrasting fortunes. While Ugarte has been used sparingly by Erik ten Hag in a bid to avoid injury, McTominay has become a star for the Serie A giants earning rave reviews from across the punditry world.

Reflecting on the decision to sell McTominay this summer, Zola told Hayters TV that the decision to allow the Scottish international to leave continues to baffle him. “I am very surprised. I couldn’t believe that Manchester United released him, to be honest,” he explained.

“I don’t really know what’s the reason, but for Napoli, he has been a great deal. I think everybody loves him so far. He scores goals, he performs very well and he left me a little bit dazzled, if I am honest. I didn’t expect that.

“Obviously, it’s a big thing for Italian football, he is doing very well.” McTominay already has two goals to his name for the Naples club so far having managed ten for United last season in all competitions.

McTominay has been utilised mainly as an attacking midfielder by Napoli boss Antonio Conte a role which he also performs for his country.
