Identity revealed for man, 65, found dead in burning East Topeka home

The Topeka Fire Department has identified Michael J. Ullman , 65, of Topeka, as the man found dead April 18 in a burning house at 419 S.E. Rodgers St., it revealed April 21.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, said Jennifer Goodrich, executive assistant to Topeka fire chief Randy Phillips.

No one else was found in the house, said Topeka fire marshal Alan C. Stahl.

Rodgers runs north and south and is located about six-tenths of a mile east of S.E. Golden Avenue.

Fire was reported just after 5:50 a.m.

Topeka firefighters were called just after 5:50 a.m. April 18 to the scene, where they found smoke coming from the house and quickly extinguished it, Stahl said.

Circumstances of the blaze remained under investigation, he said.

No damage estimate had been made public as of April 21.

No working smoke detectors were found in the house, Goodrich said.

Firefighters were assisted at the scene by the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office, Evergy, Kansas Gas Service and American Medical Response ambulance service, Stahl said.

Shawnee County Appraiser’s Office records show the property at 419 S.E. Rodgers has an appraised value of $30,030.
