Immokalee woman arrested after panting puppy left inside pickup in 110-degree weather

An Immokalee woman faces misdemeanor animal cruelty charges after authorities say she left a 6-month-old schnauzer dog named Bigotes in 110-degree weather.

Ginobeba Obregon, 34, faces one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, detectives with their Animal Cruelty Investigations Alliance arrested Obregon on Tuesday after an investigation found she left the puppy in a hot pickup for over an hour while she shopped.

Detectives said Bigotes appeared in distress, although he was not injured and appeared to be in good health after the incident.

Bigotes was on the center armrest, panting heavily, when deputies arrived at a Naples shopping plaza around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The sheriff’s office said the pickup’s engine was off and the windows were slightly cracked.

Sheriff’s deputies assisted firefighters in getting Bigotes out of the pickup as the inside temperature reached 110 degrees.

According to authorities, Obregon told sheriff’s deputies she left Bigotes inside the pickup for 30 minutes while she shopped at a boutique in the plaza.

The sheriff’s office said a concerned citizen told sheriff’s deputies she first observed the small white dog inside the pickup at 12:54 p.m. When she returned to the pickup at 1:56 p.m., Bigotes was still in distress inside the vehicle and contacted the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office investigation revealed Bigotes was left unattended inside the pickup for at least one hour and 15 minutes.

Obregon is next due in court Oct. 9 for her arraignment.
