In a 1st, Ukraine unveils drones inflicting multi-million-dollar damage in Russia

At the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Ukraine is making a significant impact by presenting its cutting-edge drone technologies at a specially dedicated pavilion.

These innovations have been developed and refined in the crucible of the ongoing conflict with Russia, and they reflect the country’s commitment to becoming a global leader in drone manufacturing.

Ukrainian firms aim to capture military and civilian markets, ranging from high-performance military equipment to hobbyist drone kits.

With a wealth of combat experience, Ukraine is not just focused on domestic applications but also extending its advanced technologies to the U.S. military, positioning itself as a reliable alternative to leading Chinese manufacturers.

Ukrainian drones

At the event, Ukraine presented various drones, including the Shrike and Vampire, that are used in combat against Russia.

On October 19, 2023, Shrike drones attacked a Russian convoy. A total of 35 drones were deployed, destroying eight tanks and four infantry fighting vehicles valued at $19 million.

On the other hand, Vampire, which was assigned to a brigade just one month ago, has destroyed $56 million worth of Russian assets, including warehouses, tanks, air defense systems, and artillery.

During the event, representatives leverage CES 2025 to engage with potential investors and global technology leaders to broaden their influence in the tech landscape.

Speaking to IE, a representative from the Ukrainian defense sector elaborated on the capabilities of their drones.

“We are a proud Ukrainian manufacturer,” the representative said.

“We offer two main types of drones: a smaller FPV model and a larger variant equipped for both military applications and civilian aid. The larger drone is particularly noteworthy, capable of carrying up to 15 kilograms of various cargo. In Ukraine, these drones perform critical functions for our military, but they are also instrumental in delivering humanitarian aid—water, food supplies, and medical equipment—to areas that are too dangerous for human access. This technology literally saves lives.”

More in Technology

The representative emphasized the durability and stability of their drones.

“These drones operate at low altitudes, making them less susceptible to enemy radar detection,” they explained. “They can drop their cargo without needing to land, which allows for flexible and efficient delivery. The operational range extends up to 15 kilometers; if the connection is lost, the drone is programmed to automatically return to its launch point, minimizing the risk of loss.”

New technology

Equipped with satellite technology, these drones are designed for ease of operation.

The representative noted the swift battery swap capability, allowing operators to quickly change batteries between missions while the previous batteries can recharge concurrently.

“All components, including software and materials, are sourced from Ukraine,” the representative underscored. “This is our pride—our best-performing drone operating on the front lines.”

The smaller drone, a classic FPV model, serves various purposes, from area surveillance to participation in drone racing.

It can also transport small packages, carrying up to 2.5 kilograms.

Although current regulations prevent the sale of these dual-use products, the focus of their participation at CES is to showcase Ukrainian ingenuity and resilience.

“We are here to demonstrate to the world what we can achieve with our skills and intellect, showing the significance of supporting Ukraine in this challenging time,” the representative added.

“These drones have gained popularity among both military personnel and volunteers, proving their versatility in a variety of missions.”

Cost-effectiveness

The cost-effectiveness of the drones is compelling; the smaller model retails for approximately $400, yet it can effectively target assets worth up to $90 million, ensuring immediate returns on investment.

“The larger drone is costlier but can target heavy equipment, including artillery systems. Its performance on the battlefield has been commendable,” they stated.

Operationally, these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can even remain functional with the failure of two engines, allowing for continued flight, albeit in a less stable manner.

This resilience underscores the innovative spirit of Ukrainian manufacturers, who continue to push the boundaries of drone technology even under the most challenging conditions.

As the global tech community watches closely, Ukraine is determined to show that it has a significant role in the future of drone technology.
