For federal employees and companies that observe federal holidays, New Year’s Day is a holiday, giving people the opportunity to have a quiet start to 2025.

There are 12 federal holidays on the schedule for 2025, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, including Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.

With it being a federal holiday, many businesses and government offices are closed for the day. Here’s what you can expect.

Is New Year’s Day a federal holiday?

New Year’s Day, which falls on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025, is a federally observed holiday, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

That means that normal government agencies and offices will be closed in observance of the holiday, as well as many other non-governmental companies.

Is the post office open on New Year’s Day?

The post office will not be delivering mail on New Year’s Day, which means there also won’t be regular mail delivery or pickups from the blue collection boxes.

Limited UPS locations will be open on New Year’s Day, and UPS Express Critical will be available for delivery. FedEx will be closed for New Year’s Day, with the exception of its Custom Critical service.

Is the stock market open on New Year’s Day? Banks?

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will not be operating on New Year’s Day, and banks will be closed.

Are the courts open on New Year’s Day?

New Year’s Day is an observed holiday by the courts, so they will be closed for the day in Rhode Island.
