Last November, Donald Trump was elected president with 64.5% of Kentucky voters supporting him. One the same ballot, Amendment 2 authorizing school choice in Kentucky was defeated by a vote of 65% against it. On Jan. 29, President Trump issued an executive order requiring federal agencies to support school choice wherever possible, which suggests a disconnect between the president and his Kentucky supporters and begs the question why.In opposition to Amendment 2, the teachers’ unions and politicians like Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman implied that school choice would siphon money from public education so rich kids could go to private schools, although that wasn’t true elsewhere. Rural school superintendents said adult employment would tumble in their counties because the Kentucky legislature would cut their money even though adult employment is not the purpose of education funding.

And all this while test scores indicate Kentucky is way behind in literacy and math comprehension.
