It List: ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ traces the rise of a king, Aaron Rodgers shows his true colors, MrBeast hosts his most ‘insane’ competition yet

Hello, friends! I’m Kelsey, your guide to all things pop culture for Yahoo Entertainment, and this is the It List, our weekly rundown of what’s new and notable. In it, I recommended a slew of upcoming releases to watch, stream, listen to, read and binge. I’ll walk you through my favorites.

What to watch

🎥 Mufasa: The Lion King roars into theaters

  • When: Mufasa: The Lion King is in theaters Dec. 20.

  • What to know: The photo-realistically animated musical serves as both a prequel and a sequel to The Lion King. It tells the origin story of Mufasa and Scar. [Good Morning America]

  • Why I’ll be watching: I was expecting something emotionally moving, but it sounds like it’ll be pretty funny too. Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner told my colleague Taryn Ryder that they “improvised almost every single thing” their characters say. [Yahoo Entertainment]

🎥 The Brutalist looms large

  • When: The Brutalist is in select theaters Dec. 20.

  • What to know: If you pay attention to critics at all, you’ve probably heard about this one. It follows an architect who survives the Holocaust and pursues the American dream. [IndieWire/Variety]

  • Why I recommend: Over the course of 215 minutes, which includes an intermission, is a beautifully tragic exploration of the immigrant experience. Star Adrien Brody told me it meant a lot to him as the child of a Hungarian refugee. [Yahoo Entertainment]

What to binge

▶️ Aaron Rodgers goes deep

  • When: Aaron Rodgers: Enigma is now streaming on Netflix.

  • What to know: The three-part series digs deeper into the football player’s life off the field, which is, well, a bit of an enigma. [People]

  • Why I’ll be watching: It comes with plenty of dishy revelations, from the extent of Rodgers’s political ambitions to what really happened when his brother won The Bachelorette. [Yahoo Entertainment]

▶️ Virgin River ramps up the drama

  • When: All 10 episodes of Virgin River Season 6 are now streaming on Netflix.

  • What to know: The hit drama series, which has already been renewed for a seventh season, follows a small community in California. This season involves the lead-up to a highly anticipated wedding. [Deadline/The Hollywood Reporter]

  • Why I’ll be watching: Benjamin Hollingsworth, who plays the town’s resident bad boy, told me there’s a “huge scene” that “changes everything.” I’ll be binging until I figure out what he means. [Yahoo Entertainment]

▶️ MrBeast goes mainstream

  • When: The first two episodes of Beast Games are now streaming on Prime Video.

  • Why I’ll be watching: Allegations about the conditions on the set of the show have made waves in the last few weeks, though MrBeast said they were “blown out of proportion.” I need to see what happens. [Yahoo Entertainment/TheWrap]
