It took one dad 10 years to realize his wife had an empty stocking. He says he’s changed

A mom whose empty Christmas stocking caused a controversy last year on TikTok, says her husband has redeemed himself.

“This year … he will be sure to fill mine,” Aubree Jones, a mother of six in Utah, tells TODAY.com. Aubree’s husband Josh Jones tells TODAY.com he was called a “horrible husband” over their viral video.

The couple share daughters Trendy, 12, Zaylee, 10, Sunny, 8, Truly, 6, and Journey, 2. Their son Rocky will turn 1 on Christmas Eve.

In the viral footage, shot in 2021 and posted last Christmas, Josh films a room filled with Christmas stockings. There’s one for Josh, each child — and even the family dog. Wait — but what’s that over there? Suddenly Josh spots an empty stocking.

“Whose is this?” Josh asked from behind the camera. “Is this an extra one?”

“No, that’s mine,” Josh’s wife Aubree Jones said, with a little laugh.

When Josh inquired as to why Aubree’s stocking is empty, she replied, “I don’t know. Santa didn’t come for me.”

“It took him 10 years to notice it’s been empty this whole time,” Aubree captioned the clip, which was titled: “PSA for husbands everywhere.”

“It was supposed to be a lighthearted thing to show what moms go through,” Aubree tells TODAY.com.

But the internet wasn’t laughing.

“All of us women felt that in our stomach. That hurt,” one person wrote in the comments.

Added another, “I got a bit teary.. you can tell there is some pain behind the ‘that’s mine.’”

Other reactions included: “This is a good example that mom does all the stuff and nobody notices,” “I would’ve been divorced” and “This literally broke my heart.”

Several noted that an empty Christmas stocking represents how moms who “create Christmas magic for everyone” are not appreciated.

“I know it looks like I was sad sitting off to the side with no gifts surrounding me, but I wasn’t sad at all,” Aubree tells TODAY.com about the video. “I was doing what most moms do, which is just enjoying my kids being happy on Christmas morning.”

“There was a lot of unnecessary negativity directed at Josh,” she adds.

Aubree pointed out in a follow-up video, “Everyone is more upset with my husband than I am … he forgot to fill my stocking but definitely remembered to make me feel loved and special through gifts and many other things. Everyone can relax.”

The couple say they share Christmas duties: Aubree shops for the kids while Josh stays up late to build and assemble toys, before playing Santa Claus on Christmas morning.

Aubree says Josh gives her fantastic gifts — they just don’t fit into a Christmas stocking.

“When it comes to Christmas gifts, my husband has always been amazing,” Aubree tells TODAY.com, adding that this year, “He’s already done all the shopping for me — I haven’t gotten one thing for him.”

In fact, says Aubree, when her video went viral, she had already received seven gifts from Josh.

Josh admits he needs to pay more attention to the little things, saying, “Love languages are very important to understand.”

Aubree admits she hadn’t clarified her feelings to Josh.

“My mom used to fill her own stockings and even get her own presents …. she taught me that if I want something, to just get it,” says Aubrey, adding, “I never thought there was anything wrong with it.”

Last year, Aubree forgot to fill her stocking and suddenly realized: “It would be nice if he filled it.”

Aubree says that since the viral video, Josh has filled her stockings with thoughtful goodies.

“I listened,” Josh says. “I’m not the best historically with gifts, but … I’ve gotten way better.”

This year, the couple are practicing Christmas minimalism.

Each family member will receive four gifts, plus matching Christmas pajamas. Their children will also play “Secret Santa” for one another.

“We’re raising our kids to think of others early on,” says Aubree. “Especially our little boy, who will grow up to fill his wife’s stocking.”
