ITV Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid interrupts show for second ‘breaking news’ announcement

Good Morning Britain‘s Susanna Reid had to pause the programme for a second time to deliver breaking news on Wednesday.

In the show’s latest episode, Susanna, 53, informed viewers: “Good morning Britain, our breaking news this morning is the UK economy showed no growth at all in July and that was for the second month in a row.”

She continued with details from recent official figures, stating: “According to official figures published in the last hour, the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, said tough measures are needed in next month’s budget to help plug, what she said, is a £22 billion black hole in the public finances.”

Her co-host Ed Balls chimed in with additional information: “Meanwhile, millions of pensioners are already set to lose their winter fuel payments this year and the controversial early release of prisoners to ease overcrowding in jails is continuing despite widespread criticism.”

Earlier in the broadcast, Susanna had made another ‘breaking news’ announcement related to the National Television Awards, reports the Express. The NTAs, to be hosted by Joel Dommett, honour television industry professionals and feature nominations for some of the most popular shows. Discussing the upcoming NTAs on GMB, presenter Charlotte Hawkins, 49, confessed she was still undecided on her outfit for the night.

Susanna teased: “I’ve got breaking news for you… Richard Arnold’s been getting ready, Charlotte doesn’t know yet what she’s going to wear!” prompting Charlotte to respond with: “A little bit worrying!”

The news comes as Kate Garraway, a fellow GMB presenter, has been nominated for a National Television Award for her documentary Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story, which chronicles her late husband Derek’s health struggles over the past few years. Sadly, Derek passed away earlier this year due to complications from coronavirus.

In a recent episode of GMB, Kate revealed why she hadn’t posted about her documentary nomination, saying: “I haven’t posted I’ve been nominated yet because I got so much backlash from doing it, for people saying ‘stop going on about it’. But actually, I realise I’m letting people down.”

Derek passed away in January 2024, nearly four years after he fell ill. After his passing, Kate took time off to be with her family and later returned to Good Morning Britain, where she admitted that making the documentary was very difficult for her, but she felt she owed it to others who care to try and help them get more support.

“One of the biggest frustrations was that he felt like a total failure, he felt like an incredible burden on the carers, on the system, on us and it didn’t matter what we said, he felt that burden, and he wanted to be a contributor,” she said.

“Making this documentary was his way of saying ‘I’m gonna speak up for the people that have supported me, the family but also those around me and the people within the care system.'” She further expressed: “It’s wonderful to have the chance to honour him and also honour the millions. I’m sad because I don’t have the chance to care anymore but I felt it would be wrong for me to sort of walk away from the caring campaign that I feel I have a responsibility for.”

Good Morning Britain airs from 6am on weekdays on ITV1
