WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden suggested Republicans are trying to impeach him because they want to shut down the government, offering his first public remarks on the GOP effort that is at the top of the House agenda.

“They just knew they wanted to impeach me,” he said at a Democratic fundraiser Wednesday evening in McLean, Va., just outside of Washington. “And now, the best I can tell, they want to impeach me because they want to shut down the government.”

Will Biden be impeached? What happens in 2024 if Joe Biden and Donald Trump are both impeached?

President Joe Biden links House Republicans’ decision to open investigation against him to a possible government shutdown.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., announced Tuesday the House will open a formal impeachment inquiry against Biden over the business dealings of his son, Hunter, and the family finances. The investigation comes as McCarthy is scrambling to win conservative votes to fund government operations beyond Sept. 30 and avoid a government shutdown.

In his remarks, Biden singled out Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a supporter of former President Donald Trump. Trump, who was impeached twice, has been pushing for Republicans to impeach Biden.

“The first day she was elected, the first thing she wanted to do was impeach Biden,” Biden said of Greene.

Biden suggested he won’t let the possibility of impeachment distract him doing his job.

“I get up every day, not a joke, not focused on impeachment,” he said. “I’ve got a job to do. I’ve got to deal with the issues that affect the American people every single solitary day.”
