Jacksonville corrections officer arrested on domestic battery charge, police say

A Jacksonville sheriff’s corrections officer was arrested on a domestic battery charge Thursday, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced.

In a Monday morning press conference, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Director of Patrol and Enforcement Joe Cowan said on Thursday, Corrections Sergeant Donald Boston, 44, was arrested on one count of domestic battery, a first-degree misdemeanor.

Cowan said officers were sent to “a domestic dispute” at Boston’s home. He said officers gathered evidence that during an argument, Boston grabbed the arm of a family member.

“When Boston grabbed the victim, the victim pulled away, causing the victim to fall to the ground,” Cowan said during the press conference. “The victim was not injured.”

However, police say Boston suffered a laceration to his arm.

“Based on the totality of the circumstances, Boston was arrested by the integrity detectives for domestic battery,” Cowan said. “Because of the privacy rights granted to family members of law enforcement officers by Florida state statute, our agency cannot identify or provide identifying information about the victim, family member.”

Cowan further explained that Boston has been stripped of his authority as a corrections officer and has been placed on “administrative status.” Boston has been employed by JSO for 17 years and 7 months, as he was hired on May 14, 2007 and became a sergeant on Oct. 24, 2022, according to Cowan.

“Once the criminal case is completed, JSO will begin an internal investigation of Boston,” Cowan said.

Boston’s arrest marks the 14th arrest of a JSO employee by the sheriff’s office in 2024. Five JSO employees were arrested by other law enforcement agencies this year, according to Cowan.

“Our collective belief in openness, transparency and accountability outweighs any personal allegiance to JSO employees,” Cowan said. “As we have said many times before, no one is above the law. If investigators find that there is probable cause to support a criminal allegation of a JSO employee after a comprehensive investigation, this agency will hold that employee accountable.”
