Two officers were shot and a suspect was killed during a shootout at a Fulton County motel Friday morning.
Police say a Fulton County officer saw a suspicious person, later identified as Rashan Jarvis Cofield, 29, of Atlanta, jaywalking near the Budgetel Inn and Suites on Fulton Industrial Blvd. near MLK Jr. Drive SW and stopped him. The officer requested assistance from South Fulton police.
When a South Fulton officer got there, Cofield opened fire on him as he opened the door of his patrol car.

South Fulton Police Chief Keith Meadows confirmed that Lt. Charles Cook was shot three times and is currently in critical condition at the hospital.
Fulton County Officer Zahir Muid was also shot and injured. Chief Meadows said Muid’s injuries were minor.

Cofield was shot and killed.
Fulton County Police Chief W. Wade Yates said Muid used his first aid training to apply a tourniquet to Lt. Cook, likely saving his life.
Meadows said he spoke with Muid, who commented that he didn’t know if he would have survived had Lt. Cook not been there.

NewsChopper 2 flew over the motel and saw a large portion of the parking lot blocked off by police tape.
Georgia State Patrol, several police departments and fire departments were also on the scene.
A Channel 2 Action News photographer saw police officers from several departments as they arrived at Grady Memorial Hospital.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation were called out to assist first responders at the scene.
Earlier this week, the South Fulton Police Department lost one of its officers. Lt. Helio Garcia was killed in a head-on collision in the line of duty when another driver veered into his lane and hit him.
