GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — For the second time in less than a month, Jim “The Shark” Dreyer will attempt to swim alone across Lake Michigan.
The swim will kick off Monday at 6 p.m. EDT at Grand Haven City Beach. Dreyer’s goal is to reach McKinley Beach in Milwaukee — an 82.9-mile point-to-point crossing, though lake currents may alter his endpoint. He will also be navigating and towing more than 200 pounds of supplies.
“Today (Labor Day) I will be making another attempt to complete the first self-sufficient swim across Lake Michigan,” Dreyer said in a Facebook post. “You knew I would try to get this done before the snow flies, right?”
Marathon swimmer says he quit Lake Michigan swim after going in wrong direction with dead GPS
Dreyer, now 61, attempted the same swim last month, but he ended up calling it off on the third day, saying he had lost two batteries for a GPS device and had gone badly off course.
He first gained notoriety in 1998 after he swam 65 miles across Lake Michigan, from Two Rivers, Wisconsin, to Ludington.

Dreyer says his latest swim will raise money for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Chief Petty Officers Association.
The journey could take 72 hours or more, according to a Monday news release. An online map will track Dreyer’s progress.
“Thank you everyone for following along and for your undying support!” Dreyer said. “You mean the world to me!”
