New York socialite Jocelyn Wildenstein’s likely cause of death has been revealed by her longtime partner, after the 84-year-old “Catwoman” died earlier this week.
Lloyd Klein, who was in a two-decade relationship with the Swiss native, told People that Wildenstein suffered from phlebitis, or the inflammation of a vein, prior to her death Tuesday in Paris.
The condition, according to Healthline, can be caused by damage to the vein wall or by a blood clot blocking a vein. The latter is called thrombophlebitis, which the Mayo Clinic says often occurs in the legs. Superficial thrombophlebitis, which is more common, occurs near the surface of the skin. Deep vein thrombosis, also known as DVT, occurs within a muscle and can increase the risk of serious health issues.

“Because of her phlebitis, the legs were very, very swollen, and the blood was blocked, and there was no oxygen in the brain,” Klein said, adding that Wildenstein’s grandmother also suffered from the condition. “We were having a nap and when I wake up, I said, ‘Jocelyn, we have to wake up, we have to get dressed,’ and she was cold and she was dead.”
Wildenstein, who was best known for her cat-like features due to extensive plastic surgery, had “perfect” health days earlier, according to Klein. He said they enjoyed dinner at the Ritz on Sunday.
“Before that, we had come for Fashion Week at Chanel. Everything was good,” Klein said.
Of losing Wildenstein just ahead of the new year, Klein said, “It’s extremely sad to lay down with your other half that I know for 21 years and waiting to celebrate New Year’s Eve and to find her cold.”
Klein previously said in a statement to Agence France-Presse that Wildenstein, who was once married to late billionaire Alec Wildenstein, died of a pulmonary embolism.
