Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday that the House will punt appropriations bills into early 2025, when Republicans will have control of Congress and the White House.
“We’re running out of clock, December 20 is the deadline,” Johnson said in an interview with Shannon Bream on “Fox News Sunday.” “We’re still hopeful we might be able to get that done, but if not, we will have a temporary measure, I think it would go into the first part of next year and allow us the necessary time to get this done.”
He added, “I think it would be ultimately a good move because the country would benefit from it because then you’d have Republican control and we’d have more say in what those spending bills are.”

Government funding is set to expire Dec. 20 and many were waiting to hear whether Johnson was planning to pass another temporary spending bill to push the deadline to next year, when Congress will have control of both chambers. Republicans have won 218 House seats for the next Congress, Democrats have won 212, and 5 remain undecided.
Johnson also spent the weekend with Trump, in Washington, Mar-a-Lago and at a UFC fight in Madison Square Garden last night.
“The new reform agenda begins in earnest as soon as President Donald J. Trump takes the office in January,” Johnson said. “And we have a full agenda to run, it’s going to be a very aggressive first 100 days of the new Congress.”
Johnson said he talked to Sen. John Thune, (R-S.D.) the newly elected Senate Majority Leader starting in January, this weekend to talk about the “aggressive agenda” ahead.
“He told me he is ready to go and deliver the America First policies produced,” Johnson said. “Which will be a very busy time for Congress and a good time for the country.”
