Jordan Love was confident on Sunday about his status for the wild-card round after injuring his elbow in Green Bay’s season-finale loss to the Chicago Bears.
On Wednesday, Love’s confidence appeared to waver. The Packers quarterback was a limited participant at Green Bay’s practice and spoke with reporters afterward about his status for Sunday’s game.
“We’ll see,” Love said when asked if he’ll play on Sunday. “I’m hopeful.”
Contrast that answer to Love’s response after the Bears game. When asked Sunday if he felt good about his chances of playing in the wild-card round, Love simply said “Yes.“
So is Love OK for Sunday’s wild-card game?
Love left Sunday’s game in the first half after taking a hit to his right elbow and did not return. The Packers had already clinched a playoff spot, and Malik Willis finished the game at quarterback.
The exact nature of his injury has not been divulged. Love told reporters Sunday that he lost feeling in his throwing hand and said yes on Wednesday when asked if he had hit his funny bone. He also said Wednesday that feeling had returned to his hand, but that elbow soreness lingered.
The warmup portion of Wednesday’s Packers practice was open to media. But when it came time for Love to throw in individual drills, practice was closed. So we’re left to rely on head coach Matt LaFleuer’s account of what exactly Love was able to do in practice.
Here’s what LaFleuer had to say when asked if Love was able to throw:
“Yeah, he was limited,” LaFleur said.
Asked to clarify, LaFleur continued: “Yeah, on a limited basis.”
That doesn’t exactly clear things up.
If the draft is the Super Bowl for front office subterfuge, the playoffs are the time for coaches to shine. LaFleur played the part on Wednesday, and we, along with the Eagles, are all left to wonder just what kind of shape Love is in.
Is he really dealing with an injury that puts his status on Sunday in jeopardy? Or is this just gamesmanship from LaFleur to keep the Eagles guessing in their game preparation? For now, only those inside the Packers know.
If Love’s status truly is in jeopardy, Willis is the next man up for Green Bay. So what’s his status?
He’s limited with a thumb injury.
