Juan Mata and Scott McTominay make Bruno Fernandes feelings clear after Man United red card response

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has received message of support from Juan Mata, Scott McTominay and many others following a difficult week. Though the decision was retrospectively overturned, the Portugal international was shown a straight red card against Tottenham last Sunday with his team going on to lose 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Following that result, pressure on Erik ten Hag increased significantly ahead of some very challenging away fixtures at Porto and Aston Villa. Concerns over his future looked set to alleviate when United stormed into a two-goal lead at Estadio do Dragao, however the game quickly turned on its head with Porto 3-2 ahead after just 50 minutes.

Things went from bad to worse later in the second half with Fernandes shown a second yellow card for a high foot. Despite being at a man disadvantage, United equalised when Harry Maguire, off the bench, headed home from a corner.

Despite his dismissal, Fernandes is available to face Aston Villa on Sunday but will miss United’s next Europa League against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce. Though one was overturned, Fernandes being sent off twice in just five days is far from ideal with the experienced midfielder taking to social media to issue an honest response.

“Tough moment as a team and personally for me, one of the hardest. Almost 5 years at the club with ups and downs, good and bad moments,” he wrote on Instagram. “Personally, I have always had challenges and adversities throughout my career and something that’s never happened was that I go silent or hide myself from responsibilities in difficult moments.

“I know it sounds cliche and most of you United fans will be tired of it, but no one is more disappointed than myself with my own moment. Even through this moment, I appreciate all of you that had positive messages of belief in me and the team [hands together emoji].”

Given his brutally honest comments and standing at United, his post received numerous responses from current teammates and past United players. Kobbie Mainoo and Rasmus Hojlund both sent red heart emojis while two very different former stars, in Mata and McTominay, sent heartfelt messages.

McTominay, who scored his first Napoli goal on Friday, wrote: “You are the man, keep the faith [red heart emoji].” Earlier in the day, Mata replied: “Always with you, better times will come [two flexed arm and two red heart emojis].”

On Sunday, United head to Villa Park to face Unai Emery’s side just a few days on from their historic Champions League victory against Bayern Munich. Given the discussion surrounding Ten Hag’s future, he will need his captain at his very best in order to avoid defeat and likely keep his job for the time being.
