Kate Garraway suffered Derek Draper mourning ‘setback’ after ‘tricky’ airport visit

Kate Garraway has shared that she experienced a “tricky” time at the airport as she embarked on a memorable birthday journey with her son Bill.

It marked the first birthday without his father Derek Draper, who passed away earlier this year. ITV’s Kate and her son were treated to a trip to Walt Disney World courtesy of her pals Vickie and Nick White.

Looking forward to spending time with the Whites and their children Monty, 15, and Tabby, 14, Kate stressed the comfort of having friend Vickie there to “hold her hand” during the trip, ensuring festivities and fun for all. However, the 57-year-old broadcaster found navigating the airport particularly daunting this time, reports the Express.

With the late Derek typically handling trip logistics, Kate felt the absence acutely, explaining to Hello!: “As anyone grieving can tell you, even the smallest triggers can set you back. The airport was particularly tricky because he was always the holiday organiser with his folder full of paperwork.”

She previously opened up about the financial strain from Derek’s continuous care needs. With Bill facing his first birthday post-Derek’s passing, Kate feared a subdued celebration at home.

But thanks to the adventure, Bill and pal Monty realized the goal of visiting Galaxy’s Edge at the Star Wars park. Reflecting on the experience, Kate said: “The whole experience has been amazing. I mean, going to Disney World for your birthday – it’s a dream come true for anyone, isn’t it?”

Kate, who has won two National Television Awards for documentaries about Derek’s Covid battle, says the family “thought about him all the time”.

She admits she still misses her husband, with whom she shares an 18 year old daughter, Darcey. Last week, Kate revealed that Darcey received her A-Level results on what would have been Derek’s birthday. Kate stated: “Darcey got her results on another one of those firsts this year – Derek’s birthday.

“She didn’t get what she might have done but hey did better than any of us feared under the circumstances. I couldn’t be prouder of her and know her Dad would be too. We went to Dad’s grave to ‘tell’ him before she went out to celebrate with friends.”
