A family has been left devastated following the sudden death of a mother and grandmother at the age of 43. Carrieanne Summers from Aberdare died in the early hours of Saturday, August 8 after spending five days in intensive care.
The mother of two and grandmother of two was taken to hospital on Monday, August 5 after she was found at home. Her daughter, Whitney Harris, described how Carrie had battled with her mental health for most of her life and was diagnosed with bipolar.
Carrie’s daughter Whitney described how when Carrie was taken to hospital on Monday she was declared brain dead but her organs were still healthy. Carrie became an organ donor when she died, with her organs having been donated to help save the lives of four people.

Whitney has spent the last five days at her mam’s bedside along with her younger sister as friends and family visited to say their goodbyes. She said the team at Merthyr Tydfil’s Prince Charles Hospital intensive care unit could not do enough to help them during the difficult time.
“I kissed her and her favourite song came on, and they said Carrie has now passed,” Whitney, 25, said. Carrie had previously registered her interests of being an organ donor, and Whitney was convinced it was the right thing when she was told just how many people needed help.
Talking about her mam, Whitney said: “She was the life and soul of the party. Even though she had her own struggles she was always the first to be there to help others. She raised so much money for Mind and New Horizons. She was the most kind and caring person.”
Carrie also participated in White Collar Boxing, once again raising money for charity. She was adored by her granddaughters, Whitney added: “She was the fun nanny, she was brilliant. She was adored so much, she will be missed so much.”
Whitney described how Carrie had a special relationship with her eldest daughter, Melody. “She asked me about her nanny and I had to tell her she had gone with the angels and would be watching her from the stars. She flung the curtains open,” she explained.
Adding a tribute, Lauren Thomas, Carrie’s cousin, said: “You were always unapologetically you. And what an absolute force to be reckoned with. You have loved and you have lost, you have struggle and you have fought back harder, but my god did you also live. You always took the opportunity to live to the absolute fullest, sometimes even when advised not to and perhaps on times that you really shouldn’t have. But in true Carrie fashion, you done it in style.
“The overwhelm of love that has been shown has proved exactly just how much your special personality touched, encouraged, supported and motivated so many people. I know that in your own ways you were bursting with pride watching your two precious perfect girls become beautiful, caring, kind people and I just know they will be the biggest part of your legacy. The hole that you will leave could never be filled.”
A fundraiser has been set up by a family friend to help give Carrie the send off that she deserves. To make a donation click here.
