The city of Kingston, the 13th-oldest community in Tennessee, turns 225 − its “quasquibicentennial” − on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
The city will host a birthday celebration that Wednesday, beginning at 4 p.m. on the grounds of the historic Roane County Courthouse in the heart of the city.
In addition to musical entertainment and the unveiling and ringing of the Rittenhouse Academy bell (the first school in Roane County, circa 1806), the winners of the elementary school poster contest and the middle school essay contest will be announced, a news release said.
A photo slide show capturing moments of Kingston history, ranging from 1865 to the present, will be playing during the festivities.
The ceremony will be led by Kingston Mayor Tim Neal with several guest speakers, including U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn, U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, state Sen. Ken Yager, state Rep. Monty Fritts and Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs. Keynote speaker will be Norm Sugarman, longtime resident of Kingston, former city councilman, and a local historian.
