Lafayette woman airlifted to Indianapolis hospital after 7-car crash on Indiana 26

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Terry Pyatt of Lafayette and her GMC Acadia bore the brunt of a seven-car accident Thursday afternoon at Indiana 26 and Tippecanoe County Road 550 East.
After the crash, Pyatt, 64, was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for her injuries and remained in critical condition Friday, according to a news release published by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department.
The chain-reaction crash started when Kelley Gray of Lafayette was westbound in her Toyota and veered left of center, clipping the side mirror of another westbound car waiting to turn left at the intersection, according to the news release, which identifies this driver only as a juvenile.
Gray's car then struck Tara Pepprock's southbound minivan that was prepared to turn eastbound on to Indiana 26, the news release states.
Gray then broadsided Pyatt's southbound Acadia, sending it into an eastbound pickup truck driven by Nicholas Smith of Lafayette, the news release states. Smith's truck was knocked backward into another eastbound pickup truck driven by Oliver King of Lafayette.
Gray and Pyatt's vehicles then struck a seventh vehicle driven by a juvenile, the news release states.
Firefighters extricated Pyatt from her Acadia, and paramedics rushed her to IU Health Arnett Hospital. From there, Pyatt was flown to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment.
Gray was taken to IU Health Arnett for treatment, according to the news release.
The other drivers all were medically assessed and treated at the scene, the news release states.
The intersection was closed for more than two hours as deputies reconstructed the crash, the news release states.
