LANSING — A Lansing woman has accepted a plea deal to resolve the last remaining criminal case stemming from a tragedy that took the life of her 2-year-old son last fall.
Emma Huver, 27, pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter on Monday, about a year after her 2-year-old son, King Muhammad, shot himself in the head after finding a loaded handgun in a vehicle they were sitting in at a gas station in the 3000 block of Dunckel Road, police said.
Huver had already been sentenced to five years in prison in a federal case stemming from the tragedy, and her plea on Monday resolves the state court case against her.
On Monday, she pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm possession as a fourth-time habitual offender, with a sentencing agreement that would fix her minimum sentences at eight years.
Huver, however, would have to serve the mandatory two years for felony firearm possession before she begins serving her other sentences, meaning she will have to serve at least 10 years in prison.
The Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office agreed to dismiss two other counts against her, as well as a separate case related to her fleeing the state after the tragedy.
The shooting that killed the toddler happened on Oct. 24, 2023, while he and his mother were sitting in the vehicle. The gun he found and used to shoot himself belonged to Avis Coward, who had gone inside the gas station.
Huver, Coward and a third person were charged and convicted in federal court.
While pleading guilty in federal court, Huver admitted possessing a purple 9mm Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistol and knowing she had previously been convicted of a felony in Ingham County Circuit Court. She said she was playing on her phone when she heard what she described as an “explosion,” court records indicate.
Police learned the two firearms in the vehicle were later removed and hidden in the backyard of a residence by Coward, who drove the vehicle away from the gas station before police arrived, officials said. It was later found abandoned and burned in a field in Lansing.
Huver was on probation in another case when the incident happened, and she cut off her GPS tether and fled the state after being granted leave from “pretrial detention” to attend her son’s funeral, the U.S. District Attorney’s Office said in a sentencing memorandum.
She was extradited to Michigan from Arizona, officials said.
Huver is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 13 by Ingham County Circuit Judge Joyce Draganchuk.
