Law roundup: Animal cruelty investigation uncovers pampered pup

Feb. 28—Called out to investigate a report of a pet left out in the cold without food or water, officers with the Kalispell Police Department instead discovered a “rather plump” dog. They spotted a wooden shack for the dog situated on the home’s porch, complete with a bed. The water dish was full and a bowl for food was also available. They noted the animal showed “zero signs of being cold with his thick fur coat.” It was also 42 degrees outside.

Investigating a hit-and-run, officers questioned a woman who looked similar to their suspect, but she denied being on the road at the time of the accident. Further, she would never be caught behind the wheel of the vehicle in question. A family member in her home corroborated her alibi.

Authorities unsuccessfully sought a man who was reportedly screaming and yelling at passing motorists. A passerby, worried the man was on drugs, phoned the police thinking he might walk into traffic.

Officers investigated a reported child abuse case involving a teacher pinching a student’s ear during class.

After a resident requested the police address a neighbor’s aggressive and fence-jumping dog, officers met with the mother of the pet’s owner, who refused to take responsibility for the animal. They gave her a few suggestions on how to keep the pooch corralled and let her know that citations were the next step.

When an Amazon package mistakenly got delivered to a previous address, the intended recipient phoned the police hoping they could track down their belongings. They told officers that the new tenants were not responding to their attempts at contact. They did, however, speak to officers and said they had already returned the packages to UPS and the post office.

A man feared missing after he failed to turn up for work and was not answering phone calls turned out to be fine. The battery in his phone had died.

Officers made sure an empty building was truly vacant for an employee who had been sent to the property to board up windows. The employee told officers that people had broken into the structure in the past.

Dispatchers took a phone call where they could mainly hear children talking in the background. When they called back they heard a small child say, “hello” before the call dropped again. An officer patrolled the area but saw nothing out of the order.

Officers unsuccessfully tried to track down a pair of minors who made off with cookies.
