Lebanese government preparing for possible war senarios with Israel

Caretaker Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati met on Wendesday with the Committee for Disaster and Crisis Management in the country and discussed “possible scenarios” in the event of extended Israeli attacks.

The meeting came a day after Hezbollah pagers exploded across Lebanon, in an operation blamed on Israel which killed at least 12 people and wounded nearly 2,800.

Environment Minister Nasser Yassin, who heads the committee, stressed that they are trying to secure enough shelters and that there are about 100 schools that can be provided by the Ministry of Education, with efforts already under way to equip them.

Addressing food supplies, Yassin said, “Food stocks are sufficient for more than three months, and a ship carrying 40,000 tons of cereals and flour is set to arrive in Lebanon.”

He added that 50,000 food rations, provided by third parties including the World Food Programme, could be distributed to displaced people.

“We also discussed the logistics required to ensure the Committee for Disaster and Crisis Management can function, including communications, roads, transport and emergency and crisis rooms,” Yassin added.

Lebanese army soldiers secure the area for an ambulance to enter the premises of the American University hospital. Eight people have been killed and some 2,750 injured in suspected coordinated explosions of hand-held telecommunications devices across Lebanon, Health Minister Firas Abiad said during a press conference in Beirut on 17 September.
