While stores usually open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 9pm on Sundays, this weekend they will lock up at 8pm for a staff event.

Staff will be rewarded with an extra hour off work as a thank you for their hard work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A statement from Lidl Ireland on Facebook said: “Please note that our stores will be closing at **8:00pm** this Sunday 17th October.

“This is to allow us hold a national staff recognition event to say thank you to our amazing teams for their continued hard work!

“We appreciate your understanding and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Hundreds of comments under the social media post have been flooding in since the announcement praising Lidl for this decision.

One person commented: “Good for you and well deserved. Thank you to all of the lovely staff who still turned up every day during a pandemic to make sure families could still shop. Enjoy your night.”

And another commenter called for stores to close even earlier, so staff can “get the party started”.

Another person expressed their praise for the supermarket giant, adding: “Well done on appreciating your staff. 10 years I worked in retail and this never happened.”
