London weather: Snow falls in capital as temperatures to plummet

Snow has fallen in some parts of London with temperatures set to plunge below freezing overnight.

Londoners posted footage of snow falling in East Finchley outside the Phoenix cinema – although other areas had only reported heavy sleet and rain as of 9pm on Wednesday.

According to BBC Weather, temperatures could plunge as low as -3C in the capital overnight.

A large swathe of southern England including south London remain under a yellow weather warning for snow until midnight which could bring up to 10cm of snow, while forecasters predict Thursday could be the coldest night of the year so far for many.

If snow falls roads and railways are likely to be affected, and there could be icy patches on untreated roads, the Met Office said.

It comes after a day of widespread disruption due to flooding in central England, caused partially by snowmelt, on Tuesday.

The poor weather conditions had forced four major airports – Manchester, Bristol, Liverpool John Lennon and Aberdeen to pause or delay flights due to icy runways.

Wednesday’s wintry conditions also come after flooding closed several major roads in England, including the A1 in Lincolnshire and the A628 in South Yorkshire, as well as hitting train services in the Midlands and the North of England.

Hundreds of schools were also closed.

Temperatures are set to continue plummeting through the week, potentially hitting minus 14C on Wednesday night and minus 16C on Thursday night, both in the North East of England and Scotland.

For the capital, snow is predicted on Wednesday evening while icy temperatures of -2C are predicted overnight on Thursday, the Met Office said.

It comes as the Environment Agency estimated that at least 300 properties have flooded since New Year’s Eve.

Snowmelt has brought further disruption to parts of England, particularly in the Midlands, following the heavy rainfall over the New Year that saw significant river and surface water flooding across the North West of England and Yorkshire, the agency said.

On Tuesday, more than 100 flood warnings were in force across England with people urged to remain vigilant over the coming days.

A danger-to-life warning was issued on Tuesday morning but was later removed for the River Soar near Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire, where people living in caravan parks were urged by the Environment Agency to act, with a large-scale evacuation needed to save lives.

Dozens of people have been rescued by firefighters across Leicestershire since Monday, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said.

Homeowners on Belton Road in Loughborough were stranded on the first floor of their semi-detached houses on Tuesday after rising water from the nearby Grand Union canal flooded the street.

In places that are still experiencing snow cover, it could be as cold as -16C on Wednesday night, and on Thursday the Pennines could see temperatures as low as -20C.

The last time the UK recorded temperatures below -20C was in February 2021 when Braemar in Aberdeenshire was measured at -23C.
