London’s Ramadan lights switched on in the West End

The spectacular Ramadan lights illuminated Central London for the third year in a row from last night (Wednesday, February 27). Coventry Street is now covered in a stunning display for the next month in celebration of the holy month for Muslims.

Each year Muslims spend the month of Ramadan fasting from dawn to dusk. At the end of this period, they break fast in a celebration with family and friends called Eid ul-Fitr.

In London, which is home to 15% of the UK’s Muslim population, this time is celebrated by the Ramadan Lights which take over parts of Central London.

“For the next month, the fantastic display will light up this bustling part of our city as a celebration of the holy month of Ramadan and a symbol of our city’s diversity “

Those looking to see the lights can find them at Coventry Street – where the 30,000+ LED display is centred. These will be shining from 5pm to 5am every day until April 6, 2025.

However, this year will see even more elements introduced in a display that is “more immersive than ever.” To mark the Aziz Foundation’s 10th anniversary, which organised the switch-on, there is a new interactive ‘Spread The Light’ installation where the public can press a button to send beams of light soaring up a structure.

London’s first Iftar Food Trail will offer a series of Halal-friendly dining spots. Attendees can also decorate their own lantern or use an interactive online map to find spaces to pray and break fast.

On March 30, once Ramadan has finished, the lights will transition from ‘Happy Ramadan’ to ‘Happy Eid’.

Rahima Aziz BEM, Trustee at the Aziz Foundation, said: “We are proud to continue this world-leading tradition for a third year, celebrating London’s rich diversity and the spirit of Ramadan. This year’s exciting new additions – from our interactive installation to the Iftar Food Trail – are designed to bring people together, fostering inclusivity and interfaith understanding in a truly meaningful way. ‘Spread The Light’ carries a universal message of hope and generosity, inviting people of all ages, faiths, and backgrounds to take part in this special occasion.”
