Louisville Spectrum warns of outages during storm. What to do if your internet goes out

Spectrum Internet, which services much of Louisville, warned customers that service outages could be brought on by winter storm conditions predicted to enter the region Sunday morning.

“We’re preparing for potential service outages during the storm,” a text message sent to Louisville-area Spectrum customers Friday afternoon said.

Spectrum offers a webpage customers can refer to in preparation for severe weather events. The page urges customers to take the following steps when a storm is forecast:

  • Have backup power sources, like flashlights and battery-operated radios, readily available.

  • Fully charge phones and other mobile devices.

  • Plug TVs and any Spectrum equipment into surge protectors to prevent them from being damaged by lightning or sudden changes in power.

  • Update notification references so important alerts are received.

What should I do if my Spectrum services go out?

Spectrum will send an alert and progress updates via email or text if a service outage impacts your area.

If your internet goes out but you still have power, you can attempt various troubleshooting tactics.

Could the storm delay the restoration of Spectrum services?

Severe weather may delay service restoration if conditions are deemed unsafe for technicians, according to Spectrum’s website.

Delays could be caused by technical issues or other circumstances including:

  • Electricity has not been restored to your residence.

  • There are downed power lines or trees.

  • Blocked roads and unplowed or flooded streets prevent crews from working.

  • Other dangerous situations are causing hazardous work conditions.

Once conditions are considered safe, Spectrum personnel will work to restore services as quickly as possible.
