Love Island star Toby Aromolaran backs calls to end street harassment after Maura Higgins incident

Love Island star Toby Aromolaran has backed calls to end street harassment in the wake of Maura Higgins being grabbed in the street by a stranger.

Last month, Maura revealed her shock after a man grabbed her by her wrist as she left an afterparty at the National Television Awards in London.

Love Islander Toby opened up about how “scary” it is that he and his girlfriend Chloe Burrows are also grabbed by strangers as they walk down the street.

The 22-year-old said that street harassment by fans needs to be “stamped out”.

“Yeah, 100%. It’s something that needs to be properly stamped out and people need to be careful of it. Because obviously I’m with Chloe as well and it happens to her as well.

“It’s a scary thing that people feel the need and feel like they’re entitled to touch you and grab you. It gets out of hand sometimes. And you have to be careful about it.

“I think people watch the show for eight weeks and they watch it every night for eight weeks, so they feel like they know you. But we don’t have a clue. We don’t know who you are.

“I’m happy to take a picture but it’s crossing boundaries and that’s when they start grabbing you.”

Toby was speaking as he arrived back to Dublin after spending a day back in Crossmolina in Mayo, where his mother Victoria is from.

He landed in Dublin on Tuesday and then took a road trip to Mayo, stopping at Kilbride and Lough Conn before getting to Crossmolina.

Speaking about his whirlwind trip, he said: “To be fair we didn’t do that much because we weren’t there for a long time. We were literally just chilling at the family house and then I went to my niece’s presentation, and I surprised her and her friends there.

“I spend my summers in Ireland.”

And he rubbished rumours that he has split with Chloe saying she couldn’t cancel her schedule to come to Ireland with him but he hopes to bring her over again soon.

“She’s got other things going on at the same time as me, so it was hard for her to drop things and come to Ireland at quick notice.

There’s always next time.

“We’re still together. I think people see stuff like she didn’t go to my party the other day and think ‘oh they’re broken up like’ but it’s just rumours. But we’re fine.”

The semi-professional footballer has been announced as brand ambassador for clothing giant BoohooMAN.

For his first venture Toby will be the face of boohooMAN’s latest going-out campaign in which he has hand-picked his own edit consisting of looks you can dress up or down this holiday season. The collection will be available from September 24 on www.boohooman.com.

Speaking about his new campaign, he said: “I’m really excited to be working with boohooMAN. The brand strives to be the best and that’s exactly what motivates me!

“I can’t wait to get stuck in with Samir and the team to create something special – big things to come.”
