Low-flying helicopters to inspect electrical lines in Monroe County

MONROE COUNTY — You might see helicopters flying extremely close to electrical lines in the coming weeks.

ITC Transmission, an independent electricity transmission company based in Novi, will inspect high-voltage transmission structures, lines and equipment by helicopter in Monroe County from Sept. 26-Oct. 1 and Oct. 2-4, weather permitting. ITC will conduct tests throughout Michigan’s lower peninsula in September and October.

“Please note, the helicopters will be flying lower than usual near the transmission lines during these inspections, which is no cause for concern for area residents,” Franco, a public relations firm representing ITC, said in a news release. “The helicopter patrols are conducted to provide an overall status of the overhead transmission system that is operated by ITC’s Michigan operating entities, ITC Transmission and Michigan Electric Transmission Company, LLC (METC).”

“These patrols are a North American Electrical Reliability Corporation requirement for ITC’s vegetation management program. They support proactive maintenance objectives and are in line with the company’s model for operational excellence,” the news release said. “They include inspections of all transmission structures and equipment including, but not limited to, monopoles, steel towers, wood poles, conductors (wires), insulators and other equipment.”

“The inspection flights are often conducted at low altitudes to allow accurate visual inspection of equipment for lightning damage, wear or other potential problems. This is normal procedure, so there is no cause for alarm if a low-flying helicopter is sighted near transmission lines,” according to the news release.
