Man arrested for trying to rob Gulfport business to return to prison

GULFPORT, Miss. (WJTV) – Gulfport police said a man was arrested for trying to rob a business in order to go back to prison.

The incident happened in the 9300 block of Highway 49 in Gulfport around 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 7.

Escaped inmate Nevin Whetstone captured in Sunflower County

According to witnesses, Michael John Polotnik, 67, entered the business and provided a note stating that this was a robbery and indicated that he had a weapon. When his demand was not met, police said Polotnik grabbed the note and fled the business.

He was later arrested and charged with one count of armed robbery.

According to police, Polotnik told detectives that he had recently been released from prison and wanted to go back. He allegedly told the detectives that if he had not been arrested, he planned to rob another business.

Polotnik is being held in the Harrison County Adult Detention Center.
