MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A 35-year-old man died after he jumped out of a medical transport SUV on Highway 99 near Chowchilla Tuesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP says around 9:15 p.m. officers responded to Highway 99 and Highway 233 for a call about a person who jumped out of a transport SUV and then the person was hit by a passing motorist from Sacramento.
Investigators with CHP say a medical transport driver from Lemoore with First Step Recovery, was driving a black 2020 Chevrolet Equinox northbound on Highway 99, south of Highway 233.
The transport driver was transporting a 35-year-old man to the Bay Area who was sitting in the right rear passenger seat of the Chevrolet when the man opened the right rear door and jumped out of the moving vehicle. The man came to rest in the number two lane.
CHP says a driver from Sacramento, was driving a Camry and did not see the man lying in the roadway and struck him.
The man suffered from fatal injuries and died at the scene.
