Man faces multiple charges in fatal shooting of Springfield resident

A man is in custody and charges have been filed after a fatal shooting in Springfield last weekend.

Ventellis B. Cooper, 48, faces three counts of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated unlawful use of a firearm and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.

Cooper was charged in connection to the fatal shooting of Antoine Williams, 39, on Oct. 13.

Police were called to the area of 17 and Cook streets just after 1 a.m. Sunday morning for reports of shots fired. Officers said they found Williams in the front seat of a vehicle with multiple gun shot wounds.

He was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries, authorities said.

Cooper was taken into custody on Oct. 14 after authorities searched his residence in the 2000 block of South 15th Street and found a firearm inside the home without owning a FOID card.

The fatal shooting was the eighth homicide in Springfield in 2024.
