A Kansas City man was charged with murder this week in relation to a fatal shooting of a man in 2023.
Micah Wayne Gibson, 36, was charged Tuesday with murder in the second degree, along with armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The shooting took place on Feb. 2, 2023, near the entrance to Swope Park golf course in Kansas City, The Star reported. Police responded to the golf course around 11:30 p.m. and discovered 53-year-old Eric Allison with traumatic injuries, later identified as gunshot wounds. Allison was pronounced dead at the scene.
An avid outdoorsman, Allison loved fishing, gardening and antiquing, according to an obituary shared online shortly after his death. He worked as an electrician and also golfed and played pool, keeping an active presence in several weekly pool leagues in the Kansas City area.
Allison is survived by wife Deanna, daughter Kaitlyn and granddaughter Lyla Rae.
“Eric never met a stranger,” the obituary read. “If you were lucky enough to be his friend, he would do anything for you.”
Allison spoke with Gibson over the phone about 15 minutes before he was shot, according to court records. An unnamed witness told police that Gibson and Allison had at least one close mutual friend but did not know each other personally, according to court records.
Gibson was arrested on March 1, 2023 by Riverside police in an unrelated incident and charged with tampering with a motor vehicle, among other things. A 9mm handgun, illegal for Gibson to own as a felon, was found on his possession during the arrest.
Police were able to charge Gibson with the murder after matching the gun to the bullet casings found at the scene of Allison’s death, according to court records.
Before Allison’s murder, Gibson had five prior felony convictions, three of which were in Jackson County.
Gibson has not been offered bond. His next court date has not yet been set.
