Aug. 13—A young man who suffered a gunshot wound to his head in late July outside a Santa Fe Sonic Drive-in has begun to show progress in recovering from his injuries, a close friend said Tuesday.
Angel Daniel-Albiery Avila Morales, 20, who was shot while working late at the restaurant on July 25, began rehabilitation Monday, his close friend Kaylee Sophia said. She shared a video on Facebook showing Avila Morales taking several steps with the help of nurses and a walker.
Sophia passed along a message from Avila Morales regarding community support of an online fundraiser to help with his medical expenses: “From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone. I feel so supported and happy.”
In recent days, Avila Morales has been talking “more and more” she said, and his speech has been improving.
“He’s been making jokes,” Sophia said. “It’s incredible — we’re so happy.”
Avila Morales moved to the United States from Guatemala in the last year, Sophia has said, and he had worked at the Sonic Drive-in, 2861 Cerrillos Road, for much of that time.
Police have accused 30-year-old Mariano Romero of shooting Avila Morales once in the head in the restaurant’s parking lot.
An arrest warrant affidavit states doctors did not initially believe Avila Morales would survive his injuries.
Romero was arrested in Albuquerque earlier this month on charges of attempted murder and bribery or intimidation of a witness.
