Manchester United handed huge Jarrad Branthwaite update as Everton reach transfer agreement

Manchester United have reportedly been handed a blow in their pursuit of Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

United have made two bids to the Toffees in an effort to sign Branthwaite this summer. However, both offers have been rejected by the Goodison Park club as United’s pursuit of the centre-back goes on.

The second offer made by United was £45million plus a further £5million in add-ons. This was an increase on the original £43million bid that was made by the Reds last month, which was also rejected.

United are looking to sign two centre-backs this summer, with Branthwaite a known target. However, a fresh update has emerged which may make it difficult for United to sign the Everton defender.

According to The Athletic, Aston Villa are close to signing Everton midfielder Amadou Onana. It has been reported that a £50million move has almost been agreed between the two clubs for Onana to complete a switch to Villa Park.

From United’s point of view, the report provides an update on Branthwaite’s future at Goodison Park. It has been claimed that once the deal for Onana has been completed, Everton will no longer be under any pressure to sell Branthwaite this summer.

As a result, Everton will only consider letting Branthwaite leave the club if a “substantial offer” is made this summer. No exact fee has been mentioned, although Everton are seemingly expected to demand an offer in excess of £75 million.

As well as Branthwaite, United are exploring other centre-back targets this summer. Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt is also wanted by the Reds, along with Lille star Leny Yoro.

United have until September 2 to complete their transfer business for the summer. It remains to be seen how many new signings will be made by the Reds before the window closes.
