Manchester United player ratings vs Rosenborg as Radek Vitek brilliant and Casemiro sluggish

Manchester United began their pre-season schedule with a 1-0 defeat against Rosenborg in Norway, with youngsters Ethan Wheatley and Ethan Ennis having the only chances of note for the visitors.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jonny Evans, Casemiro, Mason Mount, Hannibal and Marcus Rashford all played the first 45 minutes at the Lerkendal stadium and they were only the first-team players involved in the fixture.

Erik ten Hag changed his entire outfield team for the second half, with only the impressive Radek Vitek remaining on. Rosenborg are midway through their domestic season and their greater match sharpness was in evidence, with United’s goalkeeper denying them on several occasions.

The hosts also hit the woodwork four times before a 92nd-minute winner earned a victory they had probably merited. United now return to Carrington before Saturday’s fixture against Rangers at Murrayfield.

Radek Vitek

A superb performance, reeling off a string of sharp saves with the best of the lot a one-handed effort to stop Sunde’s shot. Also good on the ball and taking up high position. 9

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Had little chance to get forward and couldn’t find passes into midfield when he had the ball, going backwards and sidewards too often. 5

Will Fish

A busy outing as Rosenborg dominated the first-half. Had to work hard to keep a lively attacking trio quiet. 6

Jonny Evans

Comfortable on the ball and defended solidly on his first appearance since signing a new contract. 6

Sam Murray

Gave the ball away to give Rosenborg an early chance and struggled to tie down the lively Marius Broholm. 5

Casemiro

Hacked down by Nemcik early on but had already scuffed a clearance and later robbed of possession on the edge of his own box. A sluggish beginning. 5

Mason Mount

A promising start to pre-season. Lively on the ball and off it, turning away from challenges, tracking back diligently and creating a chance for Wheatley with a sharp pass. 7

Hannibal

His quick feet twice tempted Rosenborg players into tackles that won fouls but he offered little in possession in a central role behind the striker. 6

Ethan Williams

Struggled to get in the game, with United rarely offering much attacking threat and not getting the ball down their right. 5

Marcus Rashford

Carried the ball out from deep on one occasion and produced a moment of good skill, but was quiet with the United attack not clicking. 6

Ethan Wheatley

One excellent turn to find space to run into. Tried to link play and took up a good position to get a shot away and force Tangvik into a save. 7

Subs

Habeeb Ogunneye

Defended well in the second half and Rosenborg made few inroads down his flank. 7

Sonny Aljofree

Solid in possession and defended resolutely in the face of some pressure. 7

Rhys Bennett

Quieter than Aljofree but never shirked from the battle as Rosenborg piled forward. 6

Harry Amass

Looked assured in possession when he had it but given a tough time as Rosenborg overloaded the flank and regularly attacked down their right. 6

Toby Collyer

Looked like a throwback with his socks rolled low. Handed the captain’s armband in another sign of the promise Ten Hag sees him and produced an excellent midfield performance. 8

Maxi Oyedele

Combative presence in midfield in the second half but United didn’t see a lot of the ball. 6

Jack Fletcher

The first of Darren’s twins to play for the first-team, even in a friendly, and worked hard to press but didn’t see much of the ball. 6

Ethan Ennis

Forced the goalkeeper into a smart save and twice tried to cut infield to get a shot away from a more central area. 7

James Scanlon

A lively dribbler and one early run created panic in the Rosenborg defence. Looked a threat. 7

Joe Hugil

A willing runner but served up no chances and found it a battle to impose himself on the game. 6
