Maps show where temperatures will drop to 6C overnight in England

The UK is expected to be hit with a blast of cold weather this week with hail, thunder and wintry showers all forecast.

The Met Office said overnight temperatures on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning will drop as low as 5C in Scotland and 6C in England as any last remnants of summer are blown away by Arctic winds.

The early autumn cold means the north of England will see temperatures of 6C at 7am on Friday, when the south east, London and Wales will all experience about 7C.

In Scotland, it will be even colder, with 5C forecast for Aberdeen on Friday, while a yellow weather warning for rain is also in place across its Northern Isles for almost all of Tuesday.

The Met Office said cooler air moving in from the Arctic is behind the temperature drop this week.

In a statement on Monday, it said: “This week starts with heavy rain and strengthening winds before the weather turns a good deal colder.

“Early on Tuesday, a deepening area of low pressure will move east across northern Scotland bringing rain, which will be heavy at times, especially across Scotland and Northern Ireland.”

The Met Office said this rain will move south on Tuesday and bring cold northerly winds with it.

“This markedly cold, showery airmass spreads across the whole of the UK by midweek with hail and thunder in places, and there is the chance some of the showers could turn wintry over some Scottish mountains.”

However, it said milder air from the Atlantic will move in on Friday and into the weekend, bringing temperatures back up to around average for this time of year.

Yahoo breaks down what the weather will be like for each region of the UK, according to the Met Office.
