Marriott International signed 161 deals in Greater China in 2024

Marriott International has reported a robust year of growth in 2024 for its Greater China region, with 161 deals signed, equating to nearly 31,000 rooms, marking an average of at least three projects per week.

Kicking off 2025, the company has also announced a new agreement with SCHotel Investment and Management Group, heralding the anticipated return of the Design Hotels brand to Mainland China.

The luxury segment within Greater China has seen a 73% increase in room signings for Marriott compared to 2023.

Notable signings include new properties in Hangzhou, Sanya, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Xiamen and Wenzhou. These signings are set to enhance Marriott’s luxury offerings in key destinations across the region.

Marriott’s premium brands have also experienced significant growth, with more than 30 agreements signed last year, an 88% increase from 2023. These deals are expected to introduce Marriott in seven new destinations.

The company concluded last year with 285 open premium brand properties and 151 in the pipeline. Sheraton Hotels & Resorts, Westin Hotels & Resorts, Marriott Hotels, and Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts are among the brands that have celebrated notable signings and are set to expand their footprints in Greater China.

In early 2024, Marriott entered a long-term cooperation agreement with Delonix Group to expand the Tribute Portfolio brand in Mainland China. By the end of last year, eight deals had been signed, with two properties already open and the potential for 100 properties to join the brand in the future.

Marriott’s select brands have been a driving force, accounting for more than 75% of the signings in Greater China in 2024, with a 60% increase in signed deals compared to 2023.

Four Points by Sheraton and Fairfield by Marriott are among the brands that have secured new deals, introducing their design philosophies to prime locations. The AC Hotel by Marriott is also set to expand, offering its signature modern design and precise hotel experience.

The company’s momentum in conversions has also been strong, with owners and franchisees showing interest in Marriott’s diverse brand portfolio.

Some of the openings from last year include the St Regis Shanghai on the Bund and The Mercury Garden Shenzhen Nanshan, both Tribute Portfolio Hotels; along with the Shanghai Marriott Hotel Yangpu Riverside and Moxy Chongqing.

Marriott International Greater China president Yibing Mao said: “2024 was a landmark year for Marriott International in Greater China.

“We accelerated development with a record number of signings, celebrated 50 years in the region, forged strategic collaborations and expanded into new markets. This strong momentum is a testament to our ‘3+2+1’ growth strategy that relies on three paths to win, Best Brands & Experiences, Most Loyal Members, and Be in More Places, which fully aligns with market needs.

“Looking ahead, we reaffirm our long-term focus on Greater China, enhancing our portfolio to offer more diverse stay options for guests and drive greater value for owners.”
