Homes Under the Hammer star Martin Roberts has told of the terrifying moment the director for the BBC programme told him she’d stumbled across a dead body on set. The Wales-based property expert, 61, said when visiting one property in the Lake District hours after it had been sold, the director left the house “ashen in the face” and told Roberts there was a dead body in the bedroom.
In an interview with MailOnline he explained: “We went to this one house which had clearly been lived in until very recently. Almost like the kettle was still hot kind of thing. We went in and the director went and had a look around, and she came out absolutely ashen in the face and said: ‘There is a dead body. There’s a dead body in the bed.’”
Confused and not knowing what to do next, Roberts said he entered the house and walked up the stairs where he saw the shape of a body under the covers. “We all sort of tiptoed into the bedroom,” he recalled. “Sure enough there’s this body underneath the sheet.”

Roberts and the crew then realised the body – a pensioner – seemed to in fact be alive and was snoring. After nudging him a couple of times he said the elderly man jumped up. “He sat bolt upright, no teeth, and said: ‘Where’s my family?’”
It turned out, Roberts said, that the family who had very recently upped sticks had left granddad in the house. “The family had left, the house had been sold,” Roberts recalled. He added the crew was able to track down the family to a nearby home and granddad was reunited with them.
On Sunday, in an interview with WalesOnline, Roberts revealed the one thing you should never do when buying a renovation property, especially at auction. Speaking exclusively, the former I’m A Celebrity star said: “The one Homes Under the Hammer tip, outside the legal pack and always visiting beforehand, is never open the fridge.
“If there’s ever a fridge in a property… don’t open it, don’t even go there. A freezer? Even worse! Don’t even think about opening that door, we’re opening Pandora’s box of obnoxiousness.”
Elsewhere during the chat he revealed the one question he is always asked by fans. He said: “The big question that a lot of people have is ‘do we only show the ones that are successful’ and the reality is no, there’s no fudging on Homes Under the Hammer, it’s completely what you see is what you get.
“Sometimes people choose not to come back on the show, if they’ve made a massive loss perhaps, I don’t know, I mean we can’t force them to come on! But we don’t only look for the success stories, I think it’s good to know it’s real and one of the things I do try and encourage, I do help people with education. In fact, I meet people all the time who say you inspired me and I enjoy Homes Under the Hammer, I got inspiration from that and now I’m doing it.” For the latest TV & Showbiz news, sign up to our newsletter
