Massillon to spend less on road paving in 2025. Here’s the streets due for an upgrade

MASSILLON – A plan to repave sections of dozens of neighborhood streets is forging ahead.

The city’s proposed 2025 resurfacing effort totals approximately $1.23 million in spending, down more than $1 million from the prior year.

“We did our best to try to spread the wealth evenly,” said City Engineer Alex Pitts about putting the 2025 road repaving list together. “Maybe we can get more done next year.”

City Council discussed the road plan this week. Members could vote to authorize the effort as early as Monday’s regular meeting.

Last year’s project repaved nine miles of Massillon streets. The 2025 plan targets five miles, Pitts said.

The main reason for the drop is the city is not pulling as much funding from its carryover account. In 2024, $1.4 million of carryover dollars were dedicated toward street resurfacing, while this year’s allotment is $100,000.

“Right now the goal is to keep the carryover healthy and not pull as much from it,” Pitts said.

A few streets on the 2025 list are Erie Street N from Federal Avenue NW to State Avenue NW; 32nd Street NW from Lincoln Way NW to the northern city limit; 20th Street SE from Lincoln Way to Harsh Avenue SE; North Avenue NE from Wales Road NE to Reservoir Drive and Griffith Avenue SW from Duncan Street SW to Eighth Street SW.

Ward 6 leads the way with parts of 18 roads on the city’s repaving plan, while Ward 4 has the least with three streets.

Massillon councilwoman asks for upgrade to Overlook Avenue SW at 13th, 14th streets

City Councilwoman Julie Harwig-Smith, R-Ward 5, said residents have reached to her about fixing deteriorating portions of Overlook Avenue SW around 13th and 14th streets SW.

“I think it would be good to look at these,” she told Pitts. “I’ve been getting (multiple) calls.”

Pitts said his office would review the area, but placing Overlook Avenue on the 2026 repaving list may be more doable.

Massillon is in the fourth year of its five-year income tax levy renewal, which helps to fund annual street resurfacing projects.
