MCAS Beaufort Commanding Officer relieved of duty

BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV) — Colonel Mark D. Bortnem, Commanding Officer at the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort, has been relieved of his command, a spokesperson for the station confirmed on Tuesday.

Bortnem will be reassigned to duties as directed at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island. Brigadeer General Ralph J. Rizzo Jr., commanding general of the Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, made the formal relief effective immediately.

The decision comes due to a loss of trust and confidence in his ability to command, the spokesperson said.

Lieutenant Colonel Michael Eubanks will serve as acting Commanding Officer pending a formal appointee.

This is a developing story and WSAV will provide updates as soon as they are made available.
