McVitie’s launches first ever non fruity Jaffa Cakes flavour in 90 years

Jaffa Cakes have launched some quirky flavours over the years.

Since the original orange-filled cakes launched 90 years ago, we’ve had limited edition combinations including lemon and lime, strawberry, blackcurrant, pineapple, cherry and passionfruit.

But for the first time ever, McVities is launching a non-fruity variant. And it’s safe to say it’s one that will divide opinion – as it’s themed around a popular fizzy drink.

In a bid to attract youngsters, Jaffa Cakes Cola Bottle have hit stores today (June 10). The sweet treats will be available for limited time and cost around £1.25 for a pack of 10.

The new flavour will also be rolled out in cake bar format – but you won’t be able to get your hands on them until July 22. The £1.80 treats will hit Tesco shelves first, before being introduced in more supermarkets from August.

McVitie’s MD Adam Woolf said the launch was in response to the “huge appetite among the next generation of snacking shoppers for something genuinely new and different”. And the Jaffa Cakes have gone down well with some, who have described them as tasting “surprisingly” good.

One commenter added: “A flavour which makes you ‘umm’ at first thought but they work very well, so good.” And another gushed: “They are so nice.”

But others are going to take a little bit more convincing – as they believe the fizzy flavour is a step too far. On Instagram, one wrote: “They are rancid.”

And another bluntly added: “It’s a NO from me, these were grim.” So would you try them? Don’t forget to let us know in the comments section below.
