Met Office weather map reveals exact areas set to PLUMMET to -16C this week

A Met Office weather map has revealed the exact areas in the UK where temperatures are set to plummet to as cold as -16C over the coming days.

Severe weather warnings for snow and ice remain in place on Tuesday and Wednesday (January 7 and 8) across the north of Scotland, including Aberdeen and Inverness, and northern Ireland. All of the south coast is also covered by a snow warning on Wednesday.

A new warning for ice has also been issued across the north of England, including Greater Manchester, coming into force on Tuesday night.

The Met Office has issued a ‘brace yourselves’ weather warning ahead of plummeting temperatures over the coming days, which are expected to reach as low as -16C in some rural areas on Thursday night (January 9).

The post on X read: “Brace yourselves for some hard frosts this week. Some of our rural communities will be dropping below -10°C over the coming few nights.”

The map shows how some areas in northern England and Scotland could plummet to between -13C and -16C on Thursday night. Parts of the north west could hit -9C with the midlands and south coast experiencing lows of between -4C and -8C.

National Severe Weather Warnings for snow and ice are in place for the week, and are likely to be updated, forecasters said, with the cold snap likely to take hold of all of the UK.

Overnight snow in Northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and South West England, along with below-freezing temperatures, has meant icy conditions throughout the UK on Tuesday (January 7).

And on (January 6), the amber Cold-Health Alert (CHA) issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) was extended until midday on Sunday 12 January.

Met Office Chief Forecaster, Jason Kelly, said: “With cold weather persisting across the UK this week we have a number of severe weather warnings for wintry hazards. Snow showers will continue to fall over Scotland, Northern Ireland and into Northern Wales and northern England too.

“Where surface water and snow freeze overnight there is a risk of ice as temperatures widely dip below freezing. There will however be good spells of sunshine for those away from northern coasts, though it’ll still feel cold in the northerly breeze.”

On Wednesday afternoon there is the chance of some snowfall in parts of southern England for a time. Jason explains: “Weather conditions will start to change from the southwest on Wednesday, with fronts from the Atlantic bringing milder air along with moisture.

“As this moisture encounters the cold air, snowfall is expected particularly over higher ground and away from the coast. However, there is still uncertainty about how far north these fronts will reach. They could either skirt the south or move into southern England”

Thursday and Friday will bring continued low temperatures with snow and ice warnings likely to be issued, the Met Office added in their latest weather update.

Fronts moving in from the southwest on Friday and Saturday bring the potential for more snow, with the possibility of further warnings.

Deputy Chief Forecaster, Chris Almond, added: “Thursday will see another cold night, with potentially the lowest temperatures of the Winter so far, -15°C or so is possible in locations with lying snow in Scotland or northern England.

“In the early hours of Friday, a front arriving from the west will encounter the cold air in place over the UK. This could bring further sleet or snowfall for some regions in the south and west, as well as a risk of ice for a time as it moves north-eastwards into central parts, but the extent of this is still uncertain.”

“By Sunday, milder air will have moved in across much of the UK, meaning rain is more likely than snow as we get to the end of the weekend. Northern Ireland and Western Scotland are most likely to see some showery outbreaks of rain and breezy conditions through Sunday, with conditions further south and east drier and more settled.”

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: “We are extending the duration of our Cold-Health Alert, since the Met Office are forecasting that the low temperatures we are seeing will continue further into this week, with snow and icy conditions likely to persist.

“This weather can have a serious impact on the health of some people, including those aged 65 and over and those with pre-existing health conditions, and it is therefore vital that we continue to check in on friends, family and neighbours that are most vulnerable. These people could be more at risk of heart attacks, stroke and chest infections as a result of cold temperatures.”
