Mexican President Hits Back at Trump With New Name for North America

Mexico’s president has signaled to Donald Trump that she can play the regional renaming game, too.

Claudia Sheinbaum chided Trump on Wednesday for claiming her nation was run by drug cartels and proposing that the Gulf of Mexico—as its been named since the 17th century—be renamed the “Gulf of America.”

Sheinbaum brandished a massive map of North America from 1607 that labeled the continent as “América Mexicana,” or “Mexican America,” at a news conference. She then joked that maybe Mexico should start referring to the continent as such.

“Why don’t we call it Mexican America?” Sheinbaum said as she pointed to the map and smiled. “It sounds pretty, no?”

Trump has butted heads with Sheinbaum, a leftist scientist who became Mexico’s first female president in October, since he won re-election. The beef began over Trump’s pitch to slap 25 percent tariffs on Mexican imports—a measure that Sheinbaum has pledged to match if Trump actually implements such a measure.

The president-elect has also indicated he will deport undocumented immigrants to Mexico regardless of nationality. Sheinbaum initially pushed back, but has since indicated Mexico will accept deportees and reserves the right to limit those who come to certain nationalities. She also said Mexico may request compensation.

Now Sheinbaum, 62, and Trump, 78, are entrenched in a war of words. Sheinbaum did not take lightly to Trump’s quip on Tuesday that Mexico is “essentially run by the cartels.”

“They misinformed him,” she said. “With all due respect.”

In a clip that has quickly gone viral online, she pledged to work with the Trump White House—but not at the expense of Mexico’s independence.

“In Mexico, the people rule,” she said. “And we are going to collaborate and understand each other with the government of President Trump. I am sure of it—defending our sovereignty as a free, independent, and sovereign country.”

While Sheinbaum’s tone suggested she was joking about renaming North America, those in the MAGA world have already got to work on drafting a bill that would actually make Trump’s wish to rename the Gulf of Mexico true.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory,” Trump said Tuesday. “The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said she would introduce new legislation “ASAP” to make the name-change official. A source told the Washington Examiner there was “tons of interest” from other lawmakers wanting to co-sponsor the bill by that afternoon.
