Sep. 4—BEMIDJI — The Mississippi Headwaters Audubon Society will host a variety of outdoor events this September at the Neilson Spearhead Center nature preserve, 48851 County 29.
Walk on the Wild Side: Fungi are Fun will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7. Participants will go on a guided hike and learn about fungi growing alongside the trails with Jonathan Schilling, director of the University of Minnesota’s Itasca Biological Station.
This is a free program; donations are accepted.
Boreal Book Club will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7. This month’s book is “Entangled Life” by Merlin Sheldrake. These monthly meetings, held the second to last Sunday of each month from May to October, will begin with a short hike followed by a discussion of the book of the month.
Books are selected with the goal of including Minnesota-specific topics, Indigenous voices, memoirs, humor and adventure and information about the natural world that provokes awe and a closer connection to the earth, a release said.
The cost is $5 per month.
A Mississippi Headwaters Audubon Society Annual Celebration is set for 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15. Attendees will view updates at the Neilson Spearhead Center nature preserve (including the new platform tent cottage), celebrate the past year’s successes, honor the center’s amazing volunteers and hear what the future holds, the release said.
This is a free program; all are welcome. Light refreshments will be provided.
Mindful Yoga: Stretch and Flow will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, led by instructor Ann Gorman. These monthly classes, held the last Tuesday of each month from April through September, invite participants to engage their senses and relax in their practice while taking in the sights, sounds and smells of nature, the release said.
Participants are asked to dress in comfortable layers suited to the outside temperature the day of class and bring a water bottle. Yoga mats will be available or you can bring your own.
Weather permitting, classes will be held outdoors. The cost is $15. Mississippi Headwaters Audubon Society Members receive a discount.
A Wild-Harvested Teas and Salves Workshop will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29. Instructor Taylor Miller will lead participants on a journey of discovery by harvesting native plants to create teas and salves, the release said.
The cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members
