Aug. 23—PUKWANA, S.D. — A Mitchell woman has been charged with careless driving in connection with a fatal two-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 on Wednesday.
Stephanie Elder, 57, a state of South Dakota employee, was cited with careless driving and no seat belt, according to a South Dakota Department of Public Safety spokesman. Elder is a court reporter for the Unified Judicial System.
The crash report issued Thursday says a 2007 Ford Mustang, driven by Elder, was traveling on the interstate near Pukwana, in central South Dakota, when it collided with the rear end of a 1997 Ford F-150 that was also traveling westbound. The collision caused the driver of the F-150, a 64-year-old male, to lose control of the pickup, which entered the north ditch and rolled.
The Mustang also entered the north ditch. The driver of the F-150 was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The name of the driver of the F-150 will be released Sunday, per the policy of the state, pending notification of family. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.
The crash occurred at about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday. Pukwana is about 60 miles west of Mitchell.
Careless driving is a Class 2 misdemeanor.
