A Florida mom changed her 3-year-old daughter’s birthday party RSVP after receiving an “out-of-control” text outlining strict gift-giving rules.
In a TikTok video, Brittany Carpenter, shared that, just days before the event, the child’s parents requested plastic-free toys with no colors or sound.
According to Carpenter, the mother also instructed guests to bring a handmade card as store-bought ones “will produce waste.”

Carpenter tells TODAY.com that “many” other invitees were equally appalled by the gifting requirements.
Mariah Grumet Humbert, founder of Old Soul Etiquette, understands why Carpenter felt overwhelmed by the guidelines.
“The parents should have said something like, ‘no gifts,’ or ‘books only,’ or ‘in lieu of gifts, please make a donation to a children’s organization,” Grumet Humbert tells TODAY.com. “Buying gifts for other people’s children is challenging enough without the added stress.”
