More details emerge in court in death of 80-year-old on the South Shore

A 65-year-old man is being held for a dangerousness hearing in connection with the death of his 80-year-old roommate.

Richard Lombardi appeared in Plymouth District Court before Judge James Sullivan on Friday afternoon, facing charges of manslaughter and assault and battery on an elderly or disabled person.

Lombardi has known Frank Griswold since the early 1990s and the pair have been roommates since 2001, according to prosecutor. They have lived at 853 Main St. in Marshfield since 2008.

Lombardi told investigators that after frying a turkey on Wednesday afternoon, he had a conversation with Griswold about not touching the food. Patriot Ledger news partner WCVB reported that Lombardi didn’t want his roommate to “sneeze or contaminate the food.”

Lombardi said he later saw Griswold in the kitchen, washing dishes near the food, and he grabbed Griswold from behind and shoved him to the side, according to investigators.

Griswold fell, Lombardi’s told investigators, saying when noticed his roommate was bleeding from the head, he called 911. Griswold was transported to South Shore Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The preliminary cause of death was noted as blunt force trauma to the head and neck, but a final ruling has yet to be determined for the cause and manner of death. Griswold had a 3-inch cut above his forehead, a broken nose, a cut on his neck and a fractured cervical vertebra.

The prosecution requested a dangerousness hearing to take place on Dec. 4. Lombardi will be held without bail.
