Morgan County SWAT search finds hundreds of pills, fentanyl, cocaine, meth

Jul. 16—A Decatur man remained in jail Monday in lieu of a nearly half-million-dollar bond after the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit and SWAT team searched a residence on Beltline Road last week and found hundreds of pills, fentanyl, cocaine and meth.

Rashod Martel Lampkin, 32, is charged with trafficking fentanyl, two counts of possession with intent to distribute cocaine and meth, possession of crack cocaine, second-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a case report by MCSO Agent Cole Kelly. The Morgan County Jail website shows Lampkin was booked shortly after 3 a.m. on Wednesday and remained there Monday in lieu of a $478,000 bond.

“There was 20 small bags with the gross total weight of the pills being approximately 115 grams and 487 pills,” Kelly wrote. He said the pills, apparently purple Xanax bars, are commonly pressed fentanyl pills. “The pills will be submitted to the lab for testing.”

Court records show Kelly applied for a search warrant for Lampkin’s residence, located in the 1200 block of Beltline Road Southwest, after a confidential informant allegedly purchased meth from Lampkin.

“The CI observed a large amount of cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl pills inside of the apartment,” Kelly wrote. “The CI also observed a revolver and semi-automatic pistol while inside of the apartment. Lampkin is a suspect in a kidnapping/robbery that occurred last night (July 8).”

It’s unclear what kidnapping/robbery Kelly referred to, and MCSO spokesman Mike Swafford did not respond to requests for clarification Monday. There were no kidnapping or robbery charges filed against Lampkin as of Monday.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Circuit Judge Jennifer Howell granted the day-or-night warrant, and agents executed it at around 11:30 p.m.

Kelly requested the SWAT team’s assistance because of Lampkin’s suspected role in a “possible robbery/kidnapping,” according to Kelly’s case report.

“SWAT members knocked and announced, ‘Sheriff’s Office, search warrant,’ before utilizing a mechanical breaching tool to make entry into apartment 102,” Kelly wrote. “Before members made entry, a distraction device was deployed.”

Three adults were detained after the SWAT team entered the apartment, according to the report: Lampkin, his mother, and Steve Lampkin, 33, who was arrested for an outstanding warrant with Decatur police, according to MCSO.

As agents photographed “illegal items that were in plain view throughout the house,” according to the report, Rashod Lampkin told them that he had acquired fake Xanax bars. Kelly then allegedly found the pills in a sunglasses case tucked between a mattress and box spring.

Agents also found 1.1 grams of purple powder that field-tested positive for fentanyl, according to the report, along with a black glove containing a hard white substance that tested positive for cocaine, a crystal-like substance that did not test positive for anything, and marijuana.

Agents also recovered a 9 mm Sig Sauer P365 and a .22-caliber Clerke First revolver, according to the report. At some point during the search, Lampkin handed Sgt. Jerald Jenkins a plastic bag and said it had been “between his butt cheeks but wanted to be honest about it before they found it at the jail,” according to the report.

The bag contained smaller bags with powder-like substances that tested positive for cocaine and meth, according to the report.

“More charges may be added pending lab results and after checking Mr. Lampkin’s criminal history to see if he is forbidden to possess a firearm,” Kelly wrote.

Court records show Lampkin pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary and two counts of possession of a controlled substance in April 2022. Three pending possession charges were dropped as a condition of his plea agreement. He was given a split sentence of time served in jail with 36 months of supervised probation.

An order filed Monday shows a Morgan County magistrate last week ordered Lampkin be committed to jail without bond pending a probation revocation hearing.
